A Canton city police officer has been placed on administrative leave following a shooting that left a suspect dead just minutes after the ball dropped to ring in the New Year.
Chief Jack Angelo said in a released that police were investigating shots fired in the 2300 block of 10th St. SW just after midnight.
“…the officer, who was outside of his vehicle, confronted a subject that began shooting a firearm,” said Chief Angelo.
The officer returned fire, “in fear for his safety,” and shot the man.
“First Aid was administered and the subject was transported to an area hospital by Canton Fire paramedics,” the release said.
The person died just before 12:30 a.m., according to the Stark County Coroner’s Office.
The name of the person who died has not been released at this time. The investigation into the shooting is being handled by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI&I) and all evidence including, but not limited to, body camera and firearms, has been turned over to them.
