HS Girls Basketball Saturday: Tusky Valley stumps Hiland IVC streak at 100; New Philadelphia, TCC defenses shine in wins

The Hiland Hawks’ winning streak in the Inter-Valley Conference has ended at an even 100 games.

The streak was broken by the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans, who bested the Hawks 40-35 in Zoarville on Saturday night.

Tusky Valley (5-1, 3-0) held Hiland to 30% field goal shooting (12-40) while making 16-of-41 from the floor, at 39 percent. Brook Stookey led T.V. with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Ashley Merrick added 12 points, and Kadence Slutz scored six.

Ashley Mullet led the Hawks (4-2, 2-1) and all scorers with 18 points, while Mallory Stutzman added 10.

NEW PHILADELPHIA 37, DOVER 15

New Philadelphia remained unbeaten with a stellar defensive performance on Saturday against the Dover Crimson Tornadoes.

The Quakers (6-0, 2-0) forced 20 turnovers on the host Tornadoes and held them to just 5-of-23 from the field for the contest, including a third-quarter in which N.P. allowed just two points and no field goals on Dover (1-4, 0-2), who scored on a pair of free throws.

For New Phila, Audrey Harr racked up nine points, six assists, and four steals, while Ajia Schreffler posted eight points and 13 rebounds in the victory.

Tori Jones mustered eight points for Dover.

TUSCARAWAS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 50, AKRON NORTH 2

Another dominating performance on defense came from the Tuscarawas Central Catholic Saints, who held Akron North to just two points on Saturday.

The Saints jumped out to a 28-2 lead at halftime.

Gina Sciarretti led the Saints with 14 points, while Meg O’Donnell added eight points and Maddie Ferrell scored seven.

STRASBURG 61, MALVERN 40

Strasburg improved to 6-1 and 2-0 in conference play with a double-digit win over Malvern on Saturday.

The Tigers were paced by Rylee Thomas’s 19 points and seven rebounds, while Amelia Spidell added 12 points and Emma Gilkerson pitched in 11.

The Hornets (2-4, 1-1) were led by Maddie Powers’s game-high 28 points, along with six rebounds.

SANDY VALLEY 38, RIDGEWOOD 32

Sandy Valley pulled out a close win over the Ridgewood Generals.

Alli Nearly tallied 12 points for the Cardinals (6-1, 3-1), while Lexi Tucci tallied eight.

Alana Shroyer led Ridgewood (2-5, 0-4) with 12 points.

WEST HOLMES 41, GARAWAY 27

The Knights picked up a non-conference win on Saturday night in Millersburg.

West Holmes was led by Melanie Fair’s 18 points, while Marley Metzger paced Garaway (3-3) with eight points.

NORTHWEST 52, FAIRLESS 40

Northwest handed the Falcons their first defeat of the season on Saturday.

Lily Bottomley scored 24 points while Ashley Cudnik (13) and Gianna Kuhn (11) pitched in for the victors.

CLAYMONT 39, INDIAN VALLEY 16

Claymont improved to 3-2, 1-0 after a double-digit win over Indian Valley.

Emily Grant and Emma Woodward each scored 12 points for the Mustangs, while Ashleigh Baker led the Braves (0-5, 0-3) with four points.

MINERVA 65, CARROLLTON 55

The Minerva Lions bested the Carrollton Warriors in a Saturday Eastern Buckeye Conference face-off.

Herra Hoffee scored 18 points for Minerva, while Jenna Cassidy and Alyssa Risdon each added 17 points.

Hillari Baker led Carrollton with 24 points.

NEWCOMERSTOWN 49, CONOTTON VALLEY 13

The Trojans picked up their first win over the Conotton Valley Rockets.

Newcomerstown boosted its record to 1-5, 1-2, while the Rockets dropped to 0-5, 0-4.
