A 38-year-old man is in custody after the Ohio State Highway Patrol said a hit-and-run accident left a 13-year-old boy dead Sunday in the Mansfield area.

The OSHP said multiple tips regarding possible sightings of the vehicle that hit and killed 13-year-old Luke R. Newswanger led to the arrest of Bud D. Thornsberry, 38, of Shiloh.

Troopers said Thornsberry was driving north on Bowman Rd when he allegedly struck the 13-year-old while he was riding a bike.

According to the highway patrol, the suspect approached them while authorities were searching for him. His vehicle was seized and is currently being held as evidence.

Thornsberry has been charged with aggravated vehicular assault, tampering with evidence, and failure to stop after an accident causing death. He’s being held in the Richland County Jail.
