HS Basketball Wednesday: Strasburg boys open season with win over Orrville; New Philadelphia girls rally vs Marietta

Strasburg overcame free throw issues and a late push by Orrville to win its home opener over the Red Riders, 48-45.

Andrew Harvey led the Tigers with 17 points (all scored in the first half) on 5 3-pointers, while Cole Hutchison – who sank the go-ahead layup with less than a minute left – added 8 points.

Chris Smith led Orrville with 19 points, while Tyler Schroer added 12 points.

Strasburg led 15-4 after the opening quarter and 28-17 at the half. Strasburg led 36-28 going to the fourth quarter before the Riders rallied on a 10-2 opening run to the period.

MINERVA 49, SANDY VALLEY 42

Sandy Valley wasn’t as lucky in their home opener in a loss to the Minerva Lions.

Brayden Costea scored 23 points and Branden Davis added 15 for Minerva, while Jordan Wigfield led the Cardinals with 13 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NEW PHILADELPHIA 59, MAREITTA 49

New Philadelphia outscored visiting Marietta 18-5 in the fourth quarter to rally for an East Central Ohio League victory that boosted the Quakers 2-0 on the season.

Alyssa Miller led New Phila with 20 points, while Ajia Schreffler added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

SANDY VALLEY 46, MALVERN 31

Abbey Parker tallied 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Sandy Valley moved to 2-0 on the year.

Alli Neary added eight points and Jordan Parker put in six for the Cards.

Jenna Cassidy led Minerva with 10 points.

FAIRLESS 49, EAST CANTON 16

Fairless shut down the East Canton offense on Wednesday night.

The Falcons, who improved to 2-0, were led by Zoey Steele (15 points) and Gracie Lyon (13).

Tori Reichard and Kammi Lebo each scored four points for E.C.

STRASBURG 62, COSHOCTON 35

The Lady Tigers posted a dominant win over Coshocton on Wednesday.

Strasburg led 35-10 at halftime.

LOUISVILLE 64, CLAYMONT 39

The Louisville Leopards beat the Claymont Mustangs to move to 1-1 for the year.

Louisville led 22-6 after the first quarter and 42-15 at halftime.
