HS Sports Monday: Carrollton boys win third straight EBC title; Hiland outlasts Fairless in state-ranked soccer

Carrollton’s boys’ golf team won its third consecutive Eastern Buckeye Conference title in Monday’s 18-hole outing.

The Warriors (12-0) won the tournament with a team total of 331, led by Jaxon Rinkes’ 78, Colton Moore’s 82, Cayden Rininger’s 85, and John Birong’s 86.

“This team has worked hard for more than three years to get better at their game,” Carrollton head coach Chris Barto said after the match. “[Assistant coach Gary] Cogan and [I] are really proud to be a part of their success.”

Marlington finished second at 333, while West Branch finished third with a 357.

STRASBURG 167, CLAYMONT 174

The Tigers won by seven strokes in a Monday match with Claymont.

Trenton Bitikofer shot a 39 and John Grywalsky added a 40 for Strasburg (5-4, 4-4 IVC), while Koi Preston and Trenton Morris each carded 38s for the Mustangs.

TUSCARAWAS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 192, TUSCARAWAS VALLEY 219

Tuscarawas Central Catholic bested the Trojans in an IVC match at Wilkshire.

Tusky Valley’s Connor Garner led all golfers with a 43, while Zane Douglass led the Saints with a 44.

GIRLS GOLF

CARROLLTON 180, CLAYMONT 192

Ashlee Garner and Claire Hostetler each shot 42s in Carrollton’s home season finale win over Claymont at Carroll Meadows.

Pheobe Moore carded a 45, while Olivia Nist and Mack Rummell (both 51) also scored for the Lady Warriors.

Jocelyn Scalambrino led the Mustangs with a 42, along with Alivia Edwards’s 43.

MASSILLON WASHINGTON 183, DOVER 188

Washington edged the Crimson Tornadoes in Monday’s match at Zoar.

Dover’s Riley Schie and Ava Adams were co-match medalists at 43, while Mya Downing (45) and Kiley McIntosh (57) also qualified for the Crimson.

Morgan Hannon led the Tigers with a 44, followed by Payton Findley and Delany Maag (both 45).

BOYS SOCCER

ORRVILLE 9, FAIRLESS 0

Orrville obliterated Fairless in a Monday match as Nick Troyer became the Red Riders’ all-time winningest goalie.

Captain Deninssonn Lopez led Orrville’s scoring with a hat trick (three goals). 

GIRLS SOCCER

HILAND 2, FAIRLESS 1

Division III’s third- and fourth-state-ranked teams met in Berlin for a Monday showdown, and the Hiland Hawks scored two second-half goals to best the Fairless Falcons, 2-1.

A scoreless tie was broken by Emily Gingerich’s goal in the 49th minute to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, and Kristen Miller’s score in the 59th minute extended Hiland’s advantage.

Fairless (8-2) star Gracie Ashton cut the lead in half with a late goal, but the Hawks escaped with the victory and boosted their record to 8-2-1.

CARROLLTON 9, EDISON 1

Ariona Rutledge scored twice in the Warriors’ blowout win over Edison.

Mekala Dorsey, Kaylee Leggett, Danielle Elson, Lexi Shockey, Tianna Harrington, and Johanna Sieger also scored for Carrollton.

SANDY VALLEY 1, MINERVA 0

Grace Castalucci scored the match’s lone goal in the 79th minute of the Cardinals’ close win over the Minerva Lions in Magnolia.

VOLLEYBALL

STEUBENVILLE 25-27-25, CARROLLTON 23-25-16

Steubenville swept Carrollton in three sets on Monday.

MINERVA 25-27-25, MALVERN 17-25-9

The Lions bested the Hornets in a three-set Monday match.

Kenna Ball (six points) Maddie Powers (five kills, 10 digs) led Malvern, who fell to 0-9.

GIRLS TENNIS

DOVER 5, CLAYMONT 0

Dover swept its Monday match against Claymont at City Park – the second Crimson win over the Mustangs this fall.

Taylor Rose and Maisie Dugger recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins over Arianna Terakedis and Emma Lesiecki in singles play, along with Kaleigh McCutcheon beating Brooke Davis (6-2, 7-5).

Jenna Zeigler and Hannah Graziani were 6-1, 6-0 doubles winners over Emily Luyster and Maddie Houston, along with Grace Williams and Josei Pinellli (6-2, 6-2) over Ally Kadri and Makayla Kendall.
