Number 14 had a ball game Friday night for the Sandy Valley Cardinals.

Sandy Valley senior Mason Tucci scored in almost any way imaginable: rushing, receiving and even from the defense; finishing with five catches for 165 yards and five touchdowns.

The Cardinals were in control the whole night against the visiting Minerva Lions as they cruised to a 49-3 victory.

Ben Petro opened the scoring for the Cardinals on the first drive of the game, scoring from two yards out to put the Cardinals ahead 7-0 with 9:29 left in the first quarter.

The Lions responded by putting points on the board on the next drive with a 29-yard field goal by Nick Chaddock to cut into Sandy Valley’s lead – 7-3 with 3:26 remaining in the first quarter. That would be Minerva’s only score of the game.

Tucci scored his first touchdown on an 18-yard sweep with :54 left in the opening quarter. He was far from over. A little over a minute into the second quarter, the senior showed off his track skills, catching the ball on a short pass from sophomore QB Nick Petro and racing 79 yards to the end zone for his second touchdown of the night with 7:50 left in the second quarter.

He did it again, just three minutes later, hauling in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Petro to put the Cardinals ahead 28-3.

When the Cardinals defense took the field, Tucci didn’t want to miss out on the action. The senior scored his fourth touchdown of the first half when he intercepted a pass thrown by Minerva QB Brayden Costea and returned it 50 yards for a Sandy Valley touchdown.

The Cardinals held onto a 35-3 lead going into halftime.

Tucci and Petro connected one last time with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter, this time from 52 yards out.

Nick Petro completed eight passed for 182 yards. His older brother Ben rushed 15 times for 130 yards.

Chad Davis scored the final touchdown of the night for Sandy Valley.

Costea threw for 273 yards for Minerva.

Sandy Valley moves to 1-1 on the season. Minerva drops to 0-2.
