A confusing chain of events led to one person being stabbed and another person behind bars Friday night in Beach City.

Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell says his department was dispatched to 5364 State Route 212 NW for reports of a stabbing at 8:15 p.m.

The 911 caller told dispatch her and her boyfriend went to the house because her son was blocked in and not allowed to leave. She said when her boyfriend began walking towards the house, he was attacked with a blunt object and then stabbed.

According to witness statements, the stabbing victim, Kerry Howell, 59, of New Philadelphia was the aggressor and stabbed in self-defense. He was transported to Aultman Hospital. Daniel Emch, 66, the person who allegedly stabbed Howell in self, drove himself to the hospital and blunt trauma wounds and an apparent knife wound as well.

Sheriff Campbell says his department received statements from both of the men involved but the statements do not match. He says one of the men went as far to deny being at the Beach City home, stating he fell off a ladder, which caused his injuries.

Emch was scheduled to undergo surgery for his cut. Sheriff Campbell says both of the men are expected to survive.

Deputies, Det. Lt. Jeff Moore and Crime Scene technician Ryan Hamilton responded to the scene to investigate the matter. When the investigation is completed, the report will be submitted to Prosecutor Ryan Styer’s Office for consideration of charges.
