An elderly man was involved in a shootout with law enforcement officials Tuesday evening outside of Bolivar.
Tuscarawas County Sheriff Deputy Lt. Brian Alford tells JMN that his department responded for a suspicious letter found in a mail box on Russell Drive. Sheriff Orvis Campbell says that a deputy attempted to make contact with a suspect in the home but no one answered the door.
As the deputy walked back to his car, he heard a gunshot and saw a bullet hit the ground of the residence.
The deputy retreated into his vehicle for safety and called for backup. The suspect exited the home with a long gun and fired at police – including Bolivar and Strasburg Police.
Law enforcement returned fire at the suspect. A stand-off ensued before the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle.
A pursuit followed and the suspect crashed the vehicle at Froman Hill & State Route 800, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol. He was taken into custody. The suspect sustained injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening.
JMN is told that no officers were injured in the incident.
JMN will provide the latest information as it becomes available.
