One person is dead and another is being held on $2,000,000 bond cash or surety after a fatal fire in Minerva Saturday night.

Carroll County Prosecutor Steven Barnett told JMN that Arlen A. Atkinson, 53, has been charged with aggravated murder, murder, aggravated arson and felonious assault after allegedly setting another man on fire, resulting in death.

Barnett said the man who died was 58-year-old Scott Hupp. He and Atkinson both lived in a group home on Lilly Rd NW in Minerva.

Crews were dispatched to the group home Saturday evening for reports of a fire. It’s alleged that Atkinson dumped gasoline onto Hupp and set him on fire, causing severe injuries. Hupp was flown to Akron Children’s for treatment in the burn unit, where he died early Sunday morning.

It is believe an altercation led to Atkinson setting fire to Hupp.

Atkinson was arrested at the scene and arraigned Monday morning, according to Prosecutor Barnett.

Atkinson will appear in court again Feb. 2.
