14-year-old girl identified after deadly side-by-side crash in Tuscarawas County

A 14-year-old girl who was killed in a utility task vehicle crash in Tuscarawas County has been identified.

The Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the victim as Kya Barger, 14, of Gnadenhutten.

The fatal single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 1:05 p.m. Tuesday on Township Road 203 in Clay Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Investigators said a 2013 Polaris Ranger UTV carrying two 14-year-olds was traveling north on Township Road 203 when the driver attempted to negotiate a left-hand curve. The UTV traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting both occupants.

Barger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second 14-year-old sustained critical injuries and was treated by emergency medical personnel before being flown by medical helicopter to Akron Children’s Hospital.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said neither juvenile was wearing a seat belt or helmet at the time of the crash.

The patrol is leading the investigation with assistance from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Arrowhead Joint Fire District, Uhrichsville Fire/EMS and the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation.
